How To Make Your Food Tasty Without Adding Extra Calories

“Healthy” eating can get a bad rap because everyone assumes that their food will taste bland and disgusting if they improve their diet. But that doesn’t have to be the case! You don’t need to just eat plain chicken, rice, and vegetables to lose weight. Check out our top ways to make your food tasty without adding extra calories!

1) Salt!

Yes, I said it. The king of zero calorie seasoning. Adding a little salt really enhances the flavor of any dish. A little goes a long way, so always start small, and add more as needed. You may be asking yourself, “but I thought salt was bad for you?” Salt has definitely gained a bad reputation over the years, but you’d really have to be eating super excessive amounts for that to be the case. You actually need sodium for your body to maintain homeostasis. Staying hydrated will help you balance out your sodium levels. (Check out our blog article on all of the other ways staying hydrated is important too!) That’s why we always suggest drinking extra water if you’re eating out where you know they will add a lot of extra salt (much more than you would add to your food to season it) that you’re not used to eating. 

2) Other herbs/spices and seasonings

Spices are virtually calorie free so you can use them liberally to add a punch to your dishes! There are so many different spices, and to make it even easier on yourself you can get the pre-made seasoning blends. You can easily take a stir fry from Asian, to Mexican, to Italian, to Indian with the change up of some spices. That way your meals will never get boring! You can also play around with fresh herbs versus dried spices. There are countless ways to season your dishes, and it won’t add more calories to your plate. 

3) Condiments

Now you need to be a little careful with this one. If you know Jordan, he likes to call himself the condiment king…he knows all of the best low calorie condiments! Not all condiments are created equal, however, because some are very high in calories. But there are many delicious low calorie condiments that will really improve any dish you’re making. Some of our favorites that we use on the regular are mustards (we love Emeril’s smooth honey mustard and Philly Pretzel Factory honey mustard), salsas, and various hot sauces. These are all very low in calories. We also love all the different types of hummus and Bolthouse Farms dressings. Just make sure to measure those out more carefully as they are a little higher in calories per serving. 

Just using these three methods will greatly increase your pleasure when eating your meals without adding a lot of calories. It’s really not necessary to eat all plain food if you’re trying to watch your caloric intake or lose weight. Food should still be enjoyable even if you’re in a weight-loss phase! Hopefully this gave you a few ideas for how to spice up your boring meals and take your meal prep to a new level!
